Eunhwa Lee(aka.Josephina Lee) is a versatile interdisciplinary artist who explores the structures of emotion and human relationships across painting, installation, new media, and publishing. By utilizing a visual lexicon of text, symbols, and color, she has consistently worked to visualize the various layers of human desire and psychological dynamics. This practice has evolved into her signature conceptual framework known as the "Psychological Portrait."
Lee has participated in curated exhibitions at prestigious institutions, including the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), and the Busan Museum of Art. In 2024, supported by Seongnam City and the Seongnam Cultural Foundation, she led the convergence project Tell Me The Story: When Our Stories Become History. In this work, she collected personal narratives from Seongnam citizens and archived them through a blend of video, text, and painting.
Recognized for her innovative approach, she was selected as the sole guest artist for the 2025 Gyeongnam International Art Fair. Her large-scale participatory installation, The Room of Hospitality: Welcome VIP, received significant critical acclaim for its exploration of relational aesthetics.
Recently, she has been developing Narratives of the Border: Psychological Portraits of the Diaspora, a project based on interviews with people who have experienced diaspora, including North Korean defectors, separated families, refugees, and exiles.
Her works are held in the collections of Haslla Art World and Artbooks Co. Beyond her visual practice, she is a prolific author of numerous art books, such as Stories Behind the Paintings, A Journey Through Northern European Museums, and The Painting’s Room. By integrating art with writing, she continues to navigate the boundaries between image and language.
Psychological Portrait (2024~)
My Psychological Portraits begin with encounters and listening.
I meet people and listen closely to the stories of their lives. The interview is not simply a process of gathering information. It is a process of responding to each word with a nod, resonating with the tremors in another person’s voice, and carefully bringing the scattered fragments of their stories onto the canvas.
The memories spoken during the interview become the underlying drawing. Over this foundation, I gradually build layers of colors and patterns that reflect the interviewee’s inner world and emotional state.
Because the initial drawing contains intimate details and personal information, in the final stage I scatter paint across the entire canvas in colors that symbolically represent the interviewee. Between revelation and concealment, the acts of covering and painting again are repeated countless times.
Through this process, each abstract Psychological Portrait gradually takes shape and becomes a world of its own.
Each portrait is a landscape of the mind, containing the inner world of an individual.
Their stories are also my stories—and, ultimately, stories that belong to all of us.
At the heart of this practice is an attempt to understand and empathize with the lives of others, and to create connections between people.

The Progress of Making Psychological Portrait
This is a series of portraits that depict the psychology of people. The artist interviews people around her or a specific group of people and creates psychological portraits of their inner lives. The canvases are layered with different colors, shapes, and layers, which stems from the artist's particular process. At the bottom of the canvas, the individual's story is written as a sketch, and on top of that, shapes, colors, patterns, and rhythms are painted that are deemed to represent his or her psychology. In the final stage, paint in colors that symbolize each individual is scattered across the canvas. Interesting titles like “Be Ready,” “Memory and Mourning,” and “Poet’s Formular” came from the interviews.
